About the author

Danni from Danni in the Desert, wearing a black abaya with hijab and drinking a traditional drink called karak from a small clear glass cup in a Emirati cafe with traditioal decor in the background

My writing is born from real experiences and loosely based on real people, showcasing the warmth, generosity, and tenderness that’s so often missing from the way Arabs are portrayed.

I’ve spent over a decade living in the Gulf, interacting with locals and deeply immersing myself in the culture. Slowly unlearning many of the negative stereotypes around Muslims and the region. There are very few books that show Arab men in a positive light, and my goal was to share the side to the Gulf I’ve experienced first-hand.

Over the years I’ve had moments of laughter, of misunderstandings and seen the beauty in our differences.

I wanted to write something that felt real. Something that showed that kindness and depth plus how one can experience love with a completely different side to Arabic men that I’ve personally seen and felt.

My story

I born and was raised in the UK and moved to Dubai for work. Actually I wasn’t even keen to go to Dubai but a good friend convinced me I’d like it there!

While living in Dubai, I eventually became curious about Islam and started to learn more, then after another couple of years I finally made the decision to convert to Islam in 2018.

After converting, I met and married my Saudi husband. We’ve been married now for nearly 6 years and have one daughter together. While there are some similarities to my own story, the book is a work of fiction based on some of the real experiences over the years, along with the challenges of being in a cross-cultural marriage.

If you’ve ever thought about dating an Arab man, been involved in a cross-cultural relationship or you’re just curious about Khaleeji culture, this is the perfect book for you! Offering a deep insight into what it’s really like dating someone from outside your culture and the sometimes hilarious misunderstandings.
