- Before you embark on your metro adventure, grab a Nol card from a kiosk or a ticket machine. You must purchase this card to travel and can top it up with cash or card. It is a rechargeable card that is your key to seamless travel on the metro and other Dubai public transportation.
2. Plan Your Route:
- Dubai’s metro system is colour-coded and straightforward, with two lines: the Red Line and the Green Line. Plan your route using the metro map, which is available online and in stations if you get lost! Apps like RTA Dubai can also assist.
3. Mind the Timings:
- The metro operates from 5:30 am to midnight most days, with extended hours till 1 am on Fridays. Check the schedule in advance, especially if you’re planning a late-night trip. Dubai also extends the metro to 1 am when important events are going on in Dubai.
4. Boarding & Exiting:
- Stand behind the designated line on the platform and to the sides of the doors when a metro arrives. You’ll see markings on the floor for where you should stand. Make sure to let passengers exit first.
- Once inside, be courteous and offer your seat to those in need. Certain seats are designated for the elderly, pregnant and people of determination (as they say in UAE) also known as disabled passengers.
- When your stop approaches, head towards to the doors.
5. Be Aware of the Carriage:
- On each train there is a carriage reserved for women and children, this will be at the front or the back depending on the direction. Again it is labelled with stickers on the floor, so if you’re male make sure to avoid this carriage.
- The other carriage to be aware of is the Gold carriage. This is more expensive to travel in and you’ll need to buy a special gold Nol card if you want to use this carriage. It has slightly better seating and can be less crowded at times.

- Eating and drinking is strictly prohibited on the Dubai Metro and can land you a 200 AED fine, this includes drinking water. So take a quick sip while waiting but not inside the carriage.
